Teaching places a person in so many socially sanctioned roles that many of us fear deliberation and civic engagement. Ironically, these two arts are part of what I teach as a teacher of Rhetoric and Composition. Therefore, I am sharing some of my thoughts on race/sex/gender/sexuality. Below are some critical essays that I wrote about popular culture. In the true spirit of an ‘essay,’ they are not finished pieces of work. They are raw reflections about my reaction to a narrative and its implications. If you read these essays, I hope you will get a deeper look at my pedagogy and its relationship to my habits of thinking. These musings are also included to demonstrate that I am a ‘writer,’ and am unable to bifurcate my professional and personal interests.
